Happy Birthday, John

Image
First things first. I'm a Beatles fan. So of course I'm gonna dedicate an entire blog post in celebration of John Lennon's 75 birthday (which is today, in case you haven't noticed).  Heads up.  This post is probably gonna ramble on for a while. So where do I start? The beginning is as good a place as any. John Winston Lennon was born on the 9th of October, 1940. Flash forward 17 years and now we're at the 6th of July, 1957. Why is this date important?  This, the day of all days, was the day that John met 15-year-old Paul McCartney at St. Peters Church in Liverpool.  This meeting would evolve into a friendship and musical partnership that would become part of the world's most successful band.  A few years later, on October 5, 1962, the Beatles released their first single "Love Me Do/PS I Love You" on the Parlophone label. In 1963, they released their second single "Please Please Me" in the UK on January 11th.  This sin

Then There Was Music

As musicians, we often hear phrases like this: "I couldn't learn to play an instrument if I tried." "I'm completely tone deaf." Or perhaps the more degrading "Why would you want to be a musician? They don't get paid well." I'll get back to that last phrase in a moment, but let's address the first one. "I couldn't learn to play an instrument if I tried."  Let's be fair here.  There really aren't many things that you can learn to do without trying.  When I first starting taking piano lessons, I was sure that it was going to take me months just to remember the names of the keys on the piano. But within just a couple weeks' worth of practice, I learned them and since then have moved on to other topics. Now, I've been playing piano for nearly four years.  There are still times when I think  I'm never going to learn how to play this   whenever I come to a particularly difficult part in a piece o

Fandoms

Ah yes, the wonderful world of fandoms.  You may be wondering what on earth a fandom is.  I'll tell you. The word "fandom" is short for fanatic domain.  A fandom consists of people who share a common fanatic interest in something, such as a TV show, or a famous actor.  Fandoms have really taken off after the invention of social networking websites.  People all over the world can connect and talk about their favorite interests, which is really fantastic if none of your friends like the same things as you.  At least if you're part of a fandom, there's someone somewhere to talk to you about all your feels. That's another thing. Feels. Sometimes they're great.  Most of the time they're painful. Feels are the strong emotions that you can experience while watching or reading something that you enjoy. Sometimes there's no explanation for feels.  For instance, just last night I saw a little gif for an event which occurs in the end scene credits of

Simplicity

I realized something today.  Everything is simple.  It's just people that make things complicated. Sometimes people say things such as: "Times were much simpler in the past." "The longer I'm on this earth, the more complicated things get." This isn't entirely true.  I had a revelation that changed my whole thought process.  Things don't have to be made complicated.  Simplify things.  You want to write a book?  Make it less stressful on yourself by simplifying it.  Want to write a song?  Simplify it.  People's lives have been complicated ever since people have existed. But wow, have we made it worse. We want the best of everything and to be the best that we sometimes get caught up in that vicious cycle of self-doubt. Maybe I'm rambling again, maybe not. I was listening to the Anthology version of the Beatles song "Don't Pass Me By".  I was riding into town with my cousins to get some Halloween decorations for a Ha

The Beginning

Hey there.  I'm Emma.  This is my first blog post (hopefully soon to be many) and I'm here to tell a little about myself. I enjoy listening to and playing music.  I play piano and have for nearly three years.  My favorite composers are probably Chopin, Beethoven, Clementi... the list goes on, but I don't want to bore you with my ramblings. I love the Beatles.  A lot.  As in, I never actually had a favorite band until I became a fan of the Beatles.  Paul is my favorite. I love Marvel Comics too.  I eagerly await any new Marvel movies with great enthusiasm.  The Winter Soldier is currently my favorite character. I love art and spend quite a lot of my time sketching, painting, and experimenting with different techniques and materials. I plan to attend school at the community college this fall.  Two years spent there and I will have an Associate in Arts degree. Then I will transfer to a state university to double major in piano performance and some sort of art degree.
